So before you grab a cable or hit download, here is the correct opening move for each kind of device. None of it depends on whether you are in downtown Newark or on a gravel road in Sussex County:

  • A hard drive clicking, chirping, grinding, or refusing to spin up

    Kill the power and step away. Sounds like that mean a moving part is in trouble, almost always heads that are failing or a motor that has frozen, and every second the drive stays powered lets a wounded head keep dragging across the exact surface your files live on. Resist running software at it, resist plugging it in over and over hoping it mounts, and above all resist the old "stick it in the freezer" trick, which only invites condensation, the last thing a drive needs.     Choose Cancel, never Format. Stop writing to the card and to whatever camera, drone, or dash cam it came out of, and do not take one more shot or copy one more file onto it. That prompt nearly always points to a corrupt file system rather than erased data, and it is the format, or the next write, that does the actual harm.

  • Anything that got soaked, which in New Jersey is constant

    Floodwater, a swamped basement after a storm, a burst pipe, a spill, a phone dropped in the bay or a pool. Keep it off. Do not plug it in "just to check." Each disk in a multi-disk RAID is cloned on its own. From here on we disturb your original as little as possible, and every step that follows runs against the clone, never the failing original.

  6. Reconstruction

    Working from that clone, we rebuild whatever the case demands, mending a file system back into shape, reassembling a RAID virtually from its member images, regenerating the address tables an SSD discarded, or carving whole files out of corrupted structure, until the data stands complete and opens cleanly.

  7. Verification

    Nothing earns the word "recovered" until we have watched the files genuinely open and check out, not just confirmed they copied without an error. A file that copied but will not open is not a recovery, and we refuse to call it one.
